A Fandom Auction to help Haiti recover

What should we do?
JustMyType
heidi8 wrote in help_haiti
This Journal was created in the morning of January 13, 2010, as a place for fandomers to help raise money to help in the rescues, recoveries and rebuilding of Haiti following the tragic earthquake on January 12, 2010.

To help figure out what's best to do, I've made a poll (see below). Whatever gets the most votes may not be the final decision - things may be averaged or blended - but it's good food for thought. Comments and questions about any of this please, as I've never set up one of these before - and help from someone who has would be much appreciated.
This poll is closed.

If you don't want to wait to donate, you can help now

Scroll down for the list of charities that need your help.

ETA at 10:30 PM EST on Tuesday, January 19, 2010.

With regard to winning bids in the auctions (other than the Lightning Round and Request Thread) the Community's Mods can confirm Donations, as explained here, to any national or local Red Cross, Red Crescent, Red Magen David, OXFAM, UNICEF and/or Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres, as well as Yéle Haiti, or by purchasing the Help Haiti virtual gift sold by LiveJournal, or made at Starbucks in North America (Starbucks takes cash for donations, and no purchase is necessary).

Donations to the other entities/agencies/charities/organizations listed in this post are also Confirmable by the Comm Mods or the Offeror of your Winning Bid.

Any entities/agencies/charities/organizations requested by the Offeror whose item(s) for which you are the Winning Bidder will be Confirmable by the Offeror, even if said entities/charities/organizations are not listed on this list. In other words, if the Offeror has asked for donations to a specific charity, the Winning Bidder can donate to that charity, or to any of the Listed entities/agencies/charities/organizations.

There are lots of terrific charities out there, but we haven't had time to research every one mentioned in the comments to this post. Check with the Offeror if you want to donate to, or have already donated to, an organization not listed in this post - we're sure everyone will be able to work together in support of rebuilding Haiti and helping those whose homes and lives have been so terribly damaged by this disaster.

Please research any entities/agencies/charities/organizations that you are considering donating to. If you are in the US, Charity Navigator has a lot of info about how to avoid being scammed, the safety of text donations (yes, it can be very safe!), and the rankings for various US charities.

The State Department has set up a cellphone donation link: Text "HAITI" to 90999 and you will be charged for a $10 donation to relief efforts. (Hat tip to Rachel Maddow and the White House twitterfeed)

DirectRelief

Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres

Partners In Health (hat tip to Lizz Winstead, and read more about them at setissma's livejournal).

Portlight Strategies, who have announced plans to help "people with disabilities in Haiti...providing medical equipment, shelter, and food for them..."

Red Cross (International Site)

Red Cross/Red Crescent

Disasters Emergency Committee; if you are a UK resident please select the Gift Aid option to increase your donation without spending more out of pocket.

OXFAM America

OXFAM UK

MercyCorps - you can donate via PayPal, Google Checkout and Amazon Payments

American Friends Service Committee (Quakers)

The Clinton Foundation

Canadian International Development Agency (Canadian donors will have donations to certain agencies matched by the government as explained at the link.)

ETA on Saturday morning If the item will be sent in a package to the winner, please indicate whether the winner will pay shipping, or if you will, or if you'll work it out between the two of you. If there are limitations on where it can be sent, please indicate this too. Additional Info is probably the best place but a comment to your original post is fine too.

Lightning Round

ETA: All future posts in the Lightning Round are screened as of the morning of Monday, January 25 (a certain mod's internet connection went out last night, meh). You can still reply to Offerors and Bidders whose posts are already up on the comm, and they will get notifications, but will not be able to reply here. Therefore, please take all conversations going forward into PMs or email.

We will be hosting another Lightning Round here at help_haiti from Thursday, January 28th through Saturday, January 30th at 3:59pm, PST, in tandem with LJ's V-Gift-a-Thon, when they will be donating 100 percent of the proceeds from all vgift sales to CARE and UNICEF (LJ will even cover the credit card processing fees). It's also a good way to send paid time to friends, because for each $10 you receive in vgifts during the V-Gift-a-Thon, if you have any account type other than Permanent, you'll get two months of paid account time. We request (but cannot mandate) that all donations made during the second Lightning Round be done in the form of V-Gifts.

Let us know here if you have any questions.

[The original Lightning Round post is below.]

A few people have noted that they will be out of town or busy after the auction closes, but will have time to get creative this weekend.

This post is for them to offer creativity, in a sort of "Buy It Now" kind of way.

If you want to create drabbles or drawbles for the first X number of people who donate Y dollars (or the equivalent of your choice) to one of the entities listed here, this is the place to offer your creativity!

How to Offer
Please list the type of item and fandom (if relevant) in the Subject to your post.

Paste the following into the Comment window and fill in the non-optional spaces.

Here's an example:

User Name: Fandomy Person
Email address: myname at gmail dot com
You can see things I've created at: Link to my personal LJ comm which has all my stuff at it
I am offering: Ficlets of approximately 100 words
Fandoms: Doctor Who, The Magicians, Tomorrow People, Spider Man (recent films), Sherlock Holmes (current movie), Avatar (the Cameron film, not the cartoon)
Additional Info (optional): If you ask for Doctor Who, I can only write New Who fics; interspecies fic is ok, especially in Avatar, but not in Holmes.
Donation Minimum: $5

Note: Since I will be traveling over the weekend, it's going to have to be up to the person making the offer to decide how he or she wants to confirm that the "donation minimum" has been, er, donated. You can ask people to forward you a screencap with their address and portions of their name (such as everything but the first letter of their first and last name) blocked out, or forward a redacted version of their donation-confirming email, or a photo of the confirming text message - whatever works for you.

Please only offer if you'll be able to finish and deliver your works on or before January 22; otherwise, the standard auctions should be ok for you.

An update via somnolentblue:

-628 fandom tags

-223 authors
-3 vidders
-9 people offering other goodies

Thank you all!

Questions! And a request!

If you have a question about which category something fits into, or about the bidding process, please ask it here.

ETA: If you don't specify the currency for bidding, we will automatically presume that it's US dollars. If people want to use a currency converter, to keep things even we can use the cnnfn.com one, or Paypal's automated process.

And is anyone able to do some simple "Help Haiti" icons that people can use on LJ, DW, etc.? Much appreciation to anyone who can!

At this point (5 PM on Wednesday) I am not monitoring all comments to every post - I've turned off LJ's emailing to me all the comments for all the offering posts (except the lightning round), so if there's something I need to see, make sure it's a comment to one of the other posts.

THANKS SO MUCH TO EVERYONE for offering, bidding, pimping and cheering people on. The news out of Haiti is so grim - hopefully this will be a way for so many people around the world to help.

Thanks SO much to everyone who's posted an offer, pimped the comm, bid on something, created icons (see them below!) and contributed to this fundraising effort. We have over a hundred items on offer already, and as per the poll from this morning, we'll allow people to add things until the morning of January 20 (Eastern Standard Time).

Posts are staying relatively well organized; I'm checking them every few hours, but if anything gets very out of control, please email me so I see it relatively quickly. If the posts start to get out of control, we might need to do index posts, but if they stay as they are we should be ok.

Please visit the post here to see the current list of charities that auction winners can donate to. I was thinking that a confirmation-of-donation process next week that involves screencaps of redacted donation confirmations, combined with scanned/photographed receipts if anyone donates via cash in person, might work, but suggestions for how other fandom-run fundraisers have done it before would be much appreciated. And if you have other organizations to add to the list, or issues with any of those listed, please comment!
