Questions! And a request!

If you have a question about which category something fits into, or about the bidding process, please ask it here.

ETA: If you don't specify the currency for bidding, we will automatically presume that it's US dollars. If people want to use a currency converter, to keep things even we can use the cnnfn.com one, or Paypal's automated process.

And is anyone able to do some simple "Help Haiti" icons that people can use on LJ, DW, etc.? Much appreciation to anyone who can!

At this point (5 PM on Wednesday) I am not monitoring all comments to every post - I've turned off LJ's emailing to me all the comments for all the offering posts (except the lightning round), so if there's something I need to see, make sure it's a comment to one of the other posts.

THANKS SO MUCH TO EVERYONE for offering, bidding, pimping and cheering people on. The news out of Haiti is so grim - hopefully this will be a way for so many people around the world to help.

Is there a specific time limit on when donations for accepted requests are to be made? Or is that to be decided at the discretion of both the requester/acceptee?

I have to transfer money over to my credit card to make the donations for the auctions I won (but my card provider doesn't process payments on the weekend so it won't go through until next week no matter what)

Yes, they have to be made before February 5 or they will be in default. Until then, though, there's no rush.

Non-English confirmations?

I just donated to my country's (Germany) Oxfam. The confirmation email is obviously in German, so I was wondering whether it will be accepted as a confirmation for my donation or not, since it's not in English.

Also, there aren't any details in that email (my name, the amount of money donated etc. So I need to figure out whether I'll get a real online receit or not, because in that case I would have to get a paper one from the bank ...

Re: Non-English confirmations?

It's fine. I can read a smidge of German very badly, so I'm able to make do. If someone does a confirmation in Chinese or Hebrew, we have people we can call on to translate.

Hi, I'm writing a comment on the Donation Confirmation Station, and I'm a bit confused about the template. It says:

"It was part of the thread for:"

I don't understand what this refers to. My offering was made in a comment to the post "Offering Something Interesting". I think putting the url of the comment as the answer to the previous line of the template ("The url for the Offer is:") would cover it, but maybe there's something I've misunderstood.

Thank you very much for your help and everything you do.

Just say "something interesting". This way the people updating the database don't have to look to the URL to see what category - and therefore what tab on the spreadsheet - something was in.

I think we are sticking to just donations directly resulting from the auction, but when you think about how much companies are doing, or countries like Canada, you just know that at least $50,000 more is going to be going to Haiti just from this round. It's amazing.

I'm sorry if I missed this or it's been asked somewhere already:

While I only offered one story for auction officially, I ended up offering to write shorter ones for the bidders who didn't win as well if they still wanted to make a donation. Should I include those in the donation confirmation area? I wasn't sure if you'd want them tallied as well. :)

Sure, and thanks! Can you just make a note as to which ones weren't part of the auction itself so we don't go crazy trying to find them on the spreadsheet?

That's what we've been doing, anyway. :o) I don't see a mention of five fics, somewhere, so I think musikologie just assumed the two highest bidders had won. We're bound to have misinterpreted offers along the way, and we're very grateful to anyone who can correct us. Would you like us to notify three other winners and adapt our registration of bids accordingly?

You did! Sorry, we've been staring at these threads for so long that we sometimes forget things. I, personally, have been an expert at posting the script intended for offerers to the winning bidders and then going back to edit it all. Um. Your bid did get registered, though; we just forgot the notification. Apologies!

I am a little confused on the winning bid for Blueracoon's fic. It looks like the winner commented on a comment and just added 20 bucks to the previous comment's offer rather than making a new bid of their own. Was that legal? And also it looked like Blueracoon offered a second fic if the bid when over 10 dollars? Can you clarify? Thanks!

Hey! :o) To be honest, there was some discussion on this bid in the mod room. I have to say I personally assumed the two bidders to know each other well, and counted them as a group, though that might have been my mistake. But since they were bidding for the same thing, and that particular item got the highest total bid, it seemed fair to let it win, especially as the author had confirmed as much. You're right about the second fic, though - I'll PM the author if none of the other mods have done yet. We'll get back to you.

Re: Final Lightning Round Stats

Amazing, thanks! Will be posting about this in the round-up today....

Hi there, I'm actually working on an article about LJ charitable auction comms for Strange Horizons, where I'm an Articles Editor. I've sent a few PMs, but thought I'd post here as well. Could I talk to a comm mod or two this weekend?

It's so amazing that y'all raised $115,000!

Sure! You can email us at helphaiti.lj at gmail.com - we're so flattered to be included!

Sorry about the missed PMs - trying to catch up on everything this evening...

I offered up two items at this thread:-

I know that the winner has been advised but could you advise the second bidder as well as they have won the 5 drabbles.

Many thanks

Since we weren't sure which of the other bidders wants the five drabbles, it might be easier if you notify them - let me know if you want me to follow up with a second note, too, though.

And thank you SO much for your Offerings!

So I've received verification from the winner that they donated, and it was also sent to the comm mods. Should I post the confirmation on the confirmation page or not?

If you want it to be included in the interim tallies, then yes please. We aren't going to necessarily wrap up including all the emailed confirmations until February 4/5, as we aren't checking for defaults until then, but confirmations that are emailed in will get onto the spreadsheet by then.

Hi, i was told to come here if i had any questions or problems so...
I contacted my bidder, by comment and PM, but he/she hasn't replied yet:

I'm afraid it will be too late by the time he/she replies, and since i don't know how much i should wait, and many people have already sent in their donations...

:/ help?

Bidders have until February 5 to donate - and since Haiti will need help for a long time, there is really no "too late". If she doesn't pay by the 5th, we'll deal with her as a default, though...

Definitely - go right ahead. It's perfectly fine to do that.

Hey, I offered a pic and somebody won me and has sent me confirmation and all is great with that. Is there a date on which people are posting their stuff? I can't seem to find one!

We'll have more info about linking to your Offerings tomorrow - it'll involve an LJ comm and some del.icio.us tags - but you can also post in your own LJ whenever you want.
