Questions! And a request!

If you have a question about which category something fits into, or about the bidding process, please ask it here.

ETA: If you don't specify the currency for bidding, we will automatically presume that it's US dollars. If people want to use a currency converter, to keep things even we can use the cnnfn.com one, or Paypal's automated process.

And is anyone able to do some simple "Help Haiti" icons that people can use on LJ, DW, etc.? Much appreciation to anyone who can!

At this point (5 PM on Wednesday) I am not monitoring all comments to every post - I've turned off LJ's emailing to me all the comments for all the offering posts (except the lightning round), so if there's something I need to see, make sure it's a comment to one of the other posts.

THANKS SO MUCH TO EVERYONE for offering, bidding, pimping and cheering people on. The news out of Haiti is so grim - hopefully this will be a way for so many people around the world to help.

Okay, I feel really dumb asking this, but I'm kind of confused and short on time, so I can't scroll through 3 pages of comments at the moment. I hope this question isn't redundant (or totally blond).

When putting your services up for auction, you name off a bid--is this bid the amount of money someone who wants what you are auctioning will pay? Like, if someone takes you up, they pay the charity? And, if nobody takes it up, you pay the charity that amount? I'm not quite sure why, but I'm not understanding that part all the way. But that could just be me lacking in common sense today for some reason.

And in this case, if there's a more concise rule post or something that I might have missed in my rush, could you point it out to me?

Thank you.

Basically, the winning bidder pays the charity - the confirmation process will be up early next week. if they don't, the second place person can. If nobody bids on you, you don't have to do anything but we will <3 you anyway.

Can I offer my service in "Words" even if I'm writing in French(I'm not sure my English will be good enough)?

Yes, definitely. Just say so in the Offering or Additional Info section.

If we're offering works, it doesn't matter that we have a paypal/Visa account or whatever, does it - just so long as those bidding do? The money isn't filtered through us, right?

I'd also like to be able to provide this to people.

Willing to write as I said but I'm not quite sure where/when/who tells me what's going on. Do I get an email in my LJ box? Thanks for your help--and for organizing this.

Re: Quick question...

You need to post a comment on this post: http://community.livejournal.com/help_haiti/3155.html?mode=reply

Use the template that you can cut and paste towards the bottom of the post and fill in the non-optional spaces, and click on POST COMMENT and your offer will be live. You will get an email from everyone who bids on your offer, as they will be posting replies to your comment. The person with the highest bid at noon Easter Standard Time on January 20, 2010 is the winner. They will then make a donation, and follow the confirmation process - then, you can write the story for him/her.

If I am offering three different packages, can I make three different comments so that I can keep bidding straight for them?

So...I was talking about help_haiti with a few people in RL, and word got around, and suddenly I've got a local, student-run newspaper asking me questions about help_haiti. They're writing an article about the different ways people are getting involved in Haiti disaster aid. I was wondering whether I can get some stats from you about the community, like how many visitors/page views the community is getting? Do you have that information?

Oh wow! I can't tell page views, as I have the "guest" feature turned off, but we should be able to get a count on the number of offers as of this afternoon, as well as the number of members of the comm. Would that help?>

Two stupid questions, sorry...

1) I live in France. If I bid on something, will I have any problems paying? (I have a VISA card)

2) If I offer to write several fanfictions, do I do it in one post or several posts?

Oh, and a suggestion: is there any way there could be a thread where people could look for offers by fandom? For example I'm looking for a HP fic so I go to the place with all the links to the threads of authors who have offered to write for HP. Perhaps do something with tags? If that's impossible I'm really sorry, I certainly don't understand all of LJ yet :o

Thank you so much for answering! And congrats for what you're doing!

1. No, you can donate to a French charity.

2. Do it in several posts, to keep the bidding organized.

We've tried to figure out a way to easily structure offers by fandom, but there's thousands of posts already, and I'm not sure we can catch it up. One thing you can do individually is, on each page, use your browser's search function to find all mentions of a word like "HP" or "Potter" or a character name like "Snape". Yes, you have to go page by page, but you can scan all the offers this way. I found the word "chocolate" on all the food offers this way...

I posted 3 Help Haiti icons I made on the NCIS icon journal because I didn't know where else to add them - but they're for anyone to use.

Give me a link and I'll add them in...

I think I asked this on the wrong post, so I'll repeat the question here: if making an offer, may we specify "Please send donation to"? I understand if the answer's no, but there's one particular aid group I prefer to support.

You can request, but I don't know if you can mandate it because it's sometimes hard for people in other countries to donate to something in a different country.

Would it be possible to add some sort of info to the posts where all the offers are being made giving a quick summary of what exactly is going on here? If someone is linked to just an offers thread or one of the offers posts, the process of how this is being run and what is going on is a little unclear.

I had been working on something today and added it to the sidebar this evening, but because we turned off custom commenting pages, it isn't visible when people are linked just to one single post, and without turning on the custom comments, I don't know if we can make it automatically visible.

May turn custom comments back on just so it's visible - people can always turn off the comm's design by clicking that link in the bar on the top...

How are auction payments made? Through Paypal?

Made directly to the charity/agency you choose to support. We will have instructions on how your donation will be confirmed, without having you disclose your full name and address, by Monday.

Um, I'm not entirely sure I understand this whole program at all. I found it mentioned on one of the comms I check, and I'd like to participate, but... I'm thinking that for the fanfics, what we're doing is offering to write a scenario, either out of options we've already developed or an idea that the bidder comes up with, possibly of a certain length, for people to look at. Then people donate money by bidding on our story offers, and we write for the person who bids the highest. If I'm missing any important component or if I've got it all, please tell me either way. I really want to be involved, but I always like to know exactly what I'm doing.

Yes. The only other element of note is that people will donate directly to a charity/agency, and no money will go through the comm mods/maintainers or the offerors.

Hope you do participate, and let me know if you have any more questions!

this may be stupid, but when people bid on what you're offering, how do we know they donated?

also, can there be a post where we auction off usernames? like livejournal, tumblr, insanejournal, aim, gmail? i think a lot of people would be interested in that :) and also is there a post where i can offer single song downloads? i don't make fanmixes, but i'm willing to give away the music in my iTunes if anyone is interested!

We're going to have a confirmation process in place by Monday.

And unfortunately, we can't auction off usernames as it's against pretty much everyone's ToU - same for auctioning off individual songs.

I've got a question. I plan on offering fanfic, but I probably won't be able to write for my bidder until 15 days from now or so, because real life and uni work will keep me busy. Either way, I still want to participate and help.

tl;dr: is there a deadline for writting the fic (like, say, x days after the bidding ends*), or is that up for debate with the bidder?

(*I'm fairly sure I'm missing the deadline for the bidding, but I've looked through the comm and honestly haven't found the date. Could you tell me when the bidding ends?)

It's suggested you be able to do it by February 14th, but you can comment under additional info that it will take longer and people can choose to bid knowing that.

"The auction will close on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at approximately noon Eastern Standard Time. "

Hope that helps.
