For donations in three dollar increments

LiveJournal announced that they will be donating 100% of the proceeds from purchases of the Charity Help Haiti V-Gift v-gift to UNICEF and CARE.

The price of this v-gift is 2.99, which means it's a very easy way to make a donation in three dollar increments; if your winning bid is fifteen dollars, you can send five, or if your winning bid is five bucks and you want to round it up to six, you can send two.

In the lightning round, you can give it to the Offeror; wen the Standard Auctions close on Wednesday, we will re-allow Virtual Gifts to the help_haiti comm. We had turned off Virtual Gifts for this comm, and we ask that people not send us gifts other than the Help Haiti v-gift, but it will make it easy for us to confirm donations.

We are also working to set up a JustGiving page, but we will ask that donors outside the UK att 5% to any donations made through JustGiving, to make up for the small percentage they take for server maintenance, staff and related expenses.

Don't forget our UNICEF page, and please check out our updated Links List to the right of the page at help_haiti - we've added links to the Lightning Round del.icio.us, FAQ translations and the third Offering Words thread.

Again, thanks to everyone for their support, and to news, Associated Content and The Leaky Cauldron for reporting on the amazing things fans are doing here in help_haiti and around the web. If you know of any other articles or reports on help_haiti, or if you have any questions or comments, please let us know
As If, RAB

We cannot make it impossible to delete bids or posts.

But when you delete a bid, the person who bid before you is now in the lead. But when that person thought he or she had been outbid, they may've gone on to bid on something else, and now they are - to their surprise - in the lead on something where they thought they were losing. And that's not fair to them.

If you need to withdraw a bid, please comment to this thread. All comments are screened when posted but they may become visible in the process of replying to them to resolve the situation.

Thanks, everyone for being so understanding, helpful and supportive! Have you seen the offerings tagged on del.icio.us or visited the Lightning Round today?

One way to donate...

In the Lightning Round and later this week in the final round, is to donate to UNICEF.

We've set up a page specifically for this comm; check it out here.

We've set a goal of $5000 but it would be terrific if we could get above that by the end of the week. You don't have to be in the US to donate.

Of course, donations to other agencies and charities are fine, wonderful, fantastic and appreciated, but UNICEF is a workable option for people in so many different countries.

Saturday Morning Update

I said in a comment to someone yesterday that if we were at 3000 comments in the second Offering Words thread by the time I woke up in the morning, I'd make a third thread.

We're at 2994. Close enough, right? So here is Offering Words Thread Number Three. Wow.

While I'm doing an update, please Follow us on Twitter and check out the items that have been tagged on del.icio.us. And scroll down the comm's main page for links to translations of the FAQ into languages as diverse as Welsh, Catalan, Tagalog, Spanish, French and Italian; a team is working on Chinese. We're still looking for other translations, so if you can translate, please let us know.

We are working on a process for notifying winners and confirming donations - expect an announcement of an email address to which you'll be able to send your confirmations.

One thing we definitely want to do is allow people to send in conformations of donations while redacting or masking their full name/address/phone number, as that's often part of the confirmation email. If anyone is able to do a tutorial - with pictures - on how to use the Paint program that comes with Windows, or how to use the standard Apple program, to cover one's name with black or use the smudging tool, that would be terrific. We intend to ask people to have either their entire first name or the first letter of their first and last name visible, as well as their state/province/country, but the rest can be masked. It doesn't have to, of course, but it can be.

Again, I'm closing this post to comments, so we can keep all the questions here.

Offering Words (Thread #3)

If you are posting a new Offering of Words, please post it on this thread. Do not re-post things you posted on the other thread - that one will stay live for new bids and comments.

If you have any questions, please do not ask them on this post - ask them here instead.

If you would like to offer words - fanfic, original fic, a printed book or printed fanfic, beta reading services, podficcing services, non-fanfic editing services or the like, please use the template below to offer your words or word-related services. If you're offering a story, feel free to provide a maximum and/or minimum word count.

Since we are going to have a second round of auctions later this winter, the goal for this round will be for things that can be delivered by February 14, although if you want to offer something with a later delivery date, please indicate that in the Additional Info section. Also, if you are offering more than one item, or would like to indicate a "reserve" of up to $50, please indicate so in the Additional Info section.

This auction will close on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at approximately noon Eastern Standard Time.

Bidding Rules

Bid by commenting to the Offering post.

Bids must be raised by at least a dollar per bid

Please do not delete comment containing a bid - if you have an issue, please comment to your bid explaining what happened, or contact a Comm mod.

How to Offer
Please list the type of item and fandom (if relevant) in the Subject to your post.

Paste the following into the Comment window and fill in the non-optional spaces.

Translation Help & A Reminder About Bidding

Questions about the auction process have come in from people who speak English as a second or third language - and it would be terrific to have the FAQ available to them in their own language.

If you are able to translate the FAQ in the righthand column (as well as the User Info page) into any additional languages, that would be terrific. Just put the translation itself in a comment to this post, with the language in the subject, and we'll organize a Master List of them overnight.

Whatever we can collectively do would be terrific. And if translations are added later I can update the Master List, too.

Also, remember that to bid, you need to reply to the Offering itself, or your bid will end up lost. Double-check your bids to make sure you didn't inadvertently reply to the main post instead of to an actual offer.

Mid-Day Update

Many thanks to southern_heaven and exoticrooftile for calculating the totals to date in the Lightning Round - as of about three hours ago, about $2500 had already been donated, which is amazing. Thanks to everyone participating!

ETA At just after midnight on January 16, we crossed the three thousand dollar mark! Amazing work!

Also, you can now find us on Twitter at Help_Haiti_LJ, so please follow us and RT when you think we're interesting or useful.

We are still open for new Offerings and, of course, for bids! And the list of charities towards the bottom of the page is still growing, but it makes sense to check out groups with a monitoring agency or group, like GuideStar in the US.

Thanks again, all! You're all awesome!

Two things I wanted to clear up since there's been some confusion:

1. You can offer more than one thing at a time. You can offer things in the Lightning Round and in one or more of the Offering Posts.
2. You can bid on more than one thing at a time, too. The only limit on your bidding is your own pocketbook.
